Phule’s statue to be unveiled at UoP

A life-size statue of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule will be unveiled on the University of Pune (UoP) campus here, on the death anniversary of the social reformer on November 28.

Mumbai-based sculptor VB Panchal has sculpted the nearly 12-feet long bronze statue, which will be installed in front of the administrative building of the University.

Mahatma Phule, hailed as the pioneer of women's education in India, breathed his last in the city on November 28, 1890. Phule had also served as a member of the Pune Municipality from 1876 to 1882, while spearheading various social movements.

Speaking to Sakal Times, UoP senate member Dadabhau Shinalkar, who was following the demand for installing Phule’s statue on the University campus, said the statue would inspire the younger generation.

Executive Engineer with Estate Section of UoP, RV Patil said preparations were in full swing.
